Another Example of Why Disciples Can Be Relevant
So, I’m doing my usual reading and run across this headline, “Is Downward Dog the Path to Hell?” I thought I was reading something from the Onion or from the Landover Baptist Church site, but no, it is from Religious Dispatches. This is another reason why our expression of Christian witness, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) can be a relevant witness of Gospel if we survive this time of reformation.
“Is Downward Dog the Path to Hell?”
by Andrea R. Jain | October 27, 2010 | Religion DispatchesBe afraid. Yoga isn’t just about physical fitness and reduced stress. Evangelical leaders are increasingly warning that yoga is religious, though not in a good way, and that Christians must choose between Christianity and yoga. This view shot to mainstream attention recently when Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, warned Christians against the sin of yoga in a blog post that made headlines. But his comments were far from an isolated incident of evangelical Christian leaders inciting fear of yoga; Mohler simply took his place among the growing ranks of twenty-first century conservative Christian leaders with “yogaphobia.”
Voters are in the dark on campaign spending
Brian McLaren noted this article by E.J. Dionne Jr from the Washington Post. It is very well written and informative here a few days before a vote. I made the wild statement on Facebook that the Supreme Court had given my citizenship and the power of my vote to multi-national corporations. Mr. Dionne’s thoughts support my opinion.
Voters are in the dark on campaign spending
E.J. Dionne Jr | October 25, 2010 | The Washington PostImagine an election in a Third World nation where a small number of millionaires and billionaires spent massive sums to push the outcome in their preferred direction. Wouldn’t many people here condescendingly tut-tut over such a country’s “poorly developed” sense of democracy and the inadequacy of its political system?
That, of course, is what is going on in our country as you read this. If you travel any place where there is a contested House or Senate race, you are bombarded with attack ads, almost all against Democrats, paid for by groups that do not have to reveal where their money comes from.
