A Discipline During Lent?

I don’t know if you take up a discipline, spiritual or otherwise, during the season of Lent.  Christians are half way to Holy week and Easter.  Some give up something.  I elect to add something to my life (hat tip to Dr. Toni Cravens at Brite Divinity School).  This year I’m doing three music selections each day, posting lyrics for Lent, and journaling.

I like comedy and I particularly like smart comedy even about Christianity.  Enter Mr. Deity.  I found this web only gem from a news feed a couple of years ago and have followed the journey of Mr. Deity.  This is how I characterize the show: imagine orthodox Christianity taken to its fullest extent blended with humor, modern science, scholarship and thoughtful questions.  The latest show is, “Mr. Deity and the Host”.  If you have not picked up a discipline, spiritual or other, during Lent I suggest watching an episode of Mr. Deity each day and doing a quick journal of your thoughts, feelings, and questions.  Mr. Deity is in its third season and can be found on YouTube as well as the Mr. Deity website.  Blessings on your journey.

Lyrics for Lent

I remember the first time I saw U2.  It was dumb luck.  A group from the religion department at TCU had an extra ticket and I was lucky enough to take it.  I paid $18.00.  They were not the best seats, but I was not there to see this new band.  I was there to listen.  The lyrics as well as the music hooked me.  Lyrics like these below were written for seekers and explorers of faith.

Grace
by Bono, 2000

Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name

Grace…
It’s a name for a girl
It’s also a thought that, changed the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything

Grace, she’s got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She’s got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma, karma
She travels outside… of karma

When she goes to work, you can hear the strings
Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace…
She carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition

What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings…
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace finds goodness in everything
